- Vinyl Hull Wrap of Princess 65 Motor Yacht - 3M G251 Gloss Sterling Silver at Rozelle, Sydney
This one has taken awhile to make it's way to our new blog on the vinyl hull wrap projects the Innovative Marine Coatings team has completed. We wrapped this Princess 65 for Barrie in a pretty neat colour from 3M, Gloss Sterling Silver. This is a video of the wrap being done at White Bay 6 (Sydney Harbour Boat Storage) in Rozelle, Sydney.
- Vinyl Hull Wrap of Riviera 44 at Marmong Point Marina
This week the Innovative Marine Coatings team has been busy at Marmong Point Marina on the central coast north of Sydney below Newcastle. A well looked after Riviera 44 was the subject. While the hull had been painted a few years ago, it was ready for protection and a refresh. For the colour, the customer chose 3M Gloss Fire Blue, which turned out brilliantly making the boat really pop and look like a much more modern vessel.
- Interior Vessel Vinyl Wood Grain Wrap to Fix Milky Wood Varnish and other issues
Our team has been involved in the refurbishment using vinyl wraps on the inside of luxury vessels such as Sunseekers and other brands which has given the customer a huge choice of colour options to update the boat, and saved them a horrendous sum of money vs the traditional method of repair to boot. VARNISH GONE MILKY WHITE IN PATCHES Who knows the exact reason why some clear coat (varnish) goes milky over time. Some believe it is moisture, some believe it is UV exposure, but in our experience it has been unlikely to be either as we have seen wood veneered doors deep in vessels cabins that are affected one side of the room, but not on the other. If it was moisture, surely all would be affected. If it was UV, surely the backs of doors in the deepest darkest crew cabins would not be affected, and yet they are. WOOD CHANGED COLOUR, GENERALLY LIGHTER Some of the original timber surfaces have generally changed colour in the upper parts of the cabin where sun exposure has affected the timber and varnish causing it genera lly become lighter, and now no longer matching other areas of wood surrounding including a mis-match of colour from the front of the door versus the back of cupboard doors. CRACKING OF CLEAR COAT AND WATER DAMAGE Of course there is also the possibility of discolouration due to water damaged from leaking windows and hatches. Sometimes this will lead to the water swelling under the clear coat and then the clear coat will lift and crack, separating from the surface of the timber. THE PROBLEM While not a serious sea-worthiness problem, it unfortunately drags down the appearance and therefore value of a vessel if the interior wood is obviously discoloured, patchy, water damaged or cracked. The real problem is the huge task of correcting the issue the traditional way with sanding and re-painting. Many of the items have been permanently fixed inside the vessel and significant damaged would incur if they were forcibly removed. Items such as doors are easily removed, however, as one customer recently showed me on a door his friend had attempted to repair, one too many passes with the sander and the thin veneer will be compromised and the substrate starts to show through. The problem of then somehow sanding evenly and then painting in-situ of the items that cannot be removed then spray painting is very problematic and time consuming. THE SOLUTION, OR AT LEAST A VERY GOOD OPTION The IMC team has done several luxury vessels where we have offered and installed a solution by using the LG Hausys brand of architectural films that we import to Australia (website www.uniquevinyl.com.au ), 3M DINOC vinyl, or Vvivid architectural vinyl. How does this work? One of the films is selected to suit the look the owners are after, either trying to pick something close to the original, or by selecting a totally different look. Again, our product website www.uniquevinyl.com.au has a very good shop section showing the different vinyl finishes, however, nothing is as good as a real sample of the product which can be seen in a site meeting with us, or by ordering a product sample off the Unique Vinyl website. Installation time can then vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, but the team will try to minimise the impact to you, and if requested we can make sure to work into your time schedule so your use of the vessel is not impacted. Call or message us today if you have issues with your boat interior woods, or simply want to change the look and modernise the boat you love.

- Paint Mask Stencil - Use for long term durable signage and graphics
Are you looking for a really long-term, durable option for your signage? One that is as durable as paint? Easy, let us make a paint mask for you. HOW DOES A PAINT MASK WORK? A paint mask is an inverse of a normal sign, cut out of a special paint mask material that is quite easy to apply. We run this mask material through our cutting machine, which cuts your specific artwork out beautifully and accurately. This mask is then taken out, and the actual artwork is pulled out. Yes, that is right, we pull it out! The mask around the outside of your artwork is left behind, as this now becomes your paint mask. WANT US TO INSTALL, OR YOU WANT TO DO IT? You can choose now if you want to install the paint mask, or if you want one of our professionals to install it for you. If you choose for us to install, just ask and we can arrange this. If you want to do it, here are some instructions below, and we are only a phone call away as well. HOW TO USE A PAINT MASK How do you apply this without it falling apart? That is easy, because what we do next to your mask is apply what is called "app tape", short for application tape over the top. This is a paper sheet with a rubber style adhesive which is meant to hold pieces of the mask in place. STEP 1 - REMOVE THE BACKING PAPER AND APPLY Now careful, before you jump in and pull off 10 meters of backing paper, you need to do this in stages. Best for the bigger ones especially to do this in around 200-400mm sections, keeping the mask tight and just held off the surface, and squeegee it on slowly working from the middle out to the edged. STEP 2 - REMOVE THE TOP APP TAPE This is the top layer of paper stuck over the paint mask. This is fairly easy to remove if you have squeegeed the mask on well in step 1. Pull it off at 180 degrees (laid flat against the surface and pull it the opposite way), not 90 degrees (at right angles to your surface) if you can avoid it, as this helps you not pull bits of the paint mask off. If parts do start to come off, don't panic, just push that section down, squeegee on, and then start pulling the app tape off again. STEP 3 - PAINT, THEN REMOVE THE MASK Now, you spray or roll your paint on, then remove the mask. When is the best time to do this depends on you. We have had good success at doing this before the paint has completely dried and is around 1/2 dry. This will depend on the paint type etc. Got questions? Call us, chat, or email from our contact page.

- Pacific Island Womens Artwork applied to Radar (Haiveta) Ferry at Noakes Sydney
Passenger Ferry Radar with traditional Pacific Island Women artwork "Haiveta" Originally built at the current Noakes Sydney yard and launched in 1947, Radar has just undergone a massive refit at Noakes ( http://noakes.net.au/north-sydney.html ) Noakes contacted Innovative Marine Coatings to collaborate with the designer, BE Collective Culture ( https://becollectiveculture.com) to print and implement their design onto the hull and superstructure. Pasifika women’s markings curated by Grace Dlabik for BE with young women artists from Oceanic. Markings have been a collaborative body of work with tattoo artists and illustrators. A powerful reclamation of culture, heritage, and identity. Sean Langman, the owner, elected for all the artwork on the hull to be painted on, requiring all of this to be created with paint masks cut on our vinyl cutter and applied prior to that color of paint being sprayed, then the mask removed. Much of the artwork on the superstructure was too detailed to do with cut vinyl, and was therefore printed on our Mimaki UV printer then applied onto the surface. Some of the larger black designs were cut out of a matte black vinyl then transferred onto the pre-painted surface. The vessel will now be running passengers for Biennale Sydney ( https://www.biennaleofsydney.art ) run by Rosman Ferries (https://www.rosman.com.au ) , after which she will return into the Rosman Ferry fleet as a charter vessel. This section of artwork on the top deck was freehand painted by the artists!
- How we print and cut sail and boat graphics
One of our printers, a Mimaki UCJV150, doing its job well. Printing, instantly curing the ink with Ultraviolet lamps, then cutting around the sail print straight afterward, before moving on to the next...20 in total! This is one of the methods that Innovative Marine Coatings uses to create stunning sail and hull graphics for yachts through to commercial boats, long term through to temporary applications. The final result, with printed hull graphic wraps applied and sail decals all on ready for racing with Sail GP.
- Video of vinyl hull wrap of aluminium training boat for Yamaha Australia
Just a small boat this time. Normally at Innovative Marine Coatings, we specialize in larger boat wraps 25ft and above, but Yamaha asked, so we did! This is the culmination of a design and print then install of a navy camouflage wrap with integrated sharks, swordfish, dolphins and the like into the wrap. Prior to application, the aluminum needed to be sealed with a clear coat which we applied to promote adhesion to the sand-blasted aluminum surface which was fairly rough.
