- Cruisers 455 Hull Wrap at Bobbin Head by Innovative Wraps
Originally, Mike from Mike Gaffikin Marine http://www.mgmarine.com.au/contact/) contacted Innovative Marine Coatings about a boat that was selling to a Queensland based buyer. Mike conveyed that the new owner was keen on the boat, but was interested in wrapping the hull to hide the faded blue gelcoat on the hull. IMC coordinated with the customer who chose the 3M marine vinyl colour, Gloss Charcoal Metallic G211 and the vinyl was ordered. Thankfully, the excellent facilities at Empire Marina in Bobbin Head (https://www.empiremarinas.com.au) meant that the boat was placed in the shed, so despite the rain the weekend vinyl wrap could proceed. The pictures speak for themselves, it looks new! A larger-scale project with similar preparation and finishing requirements was the work carried out on Beluga , where the team completed a full hull wrap and applied a gloss coating system to the superstructure. The yacht was positioned in a suitable facility, which helped maintain the consistency of the finish.
- Custom Sail Graphics Printing by Innovative Wraps
We were honoured to be part of the team who delivered branding solutions for the hulls and sails of the WASZP boats competing in the SAILGP events. If you haven't seen a WASZP yet, check these cool little foiling speed machines out at WASZP and more photos of the Sydney series here. In collaboration with the WASZP installer, we figured out the correct 3M material to print on and using our Mimaki printer with Ultraviolet cured inks, we printed up all the sail and hull artwork for the boat with country flags along with extras for spares. See more of the completed hull and sail decals at the Sydney event video below Another print-focused project was the Princess 65 in Sydney , where we produced custom artwork and applied it across the hull. The job involved colour matching, accurate alignment, and the same attention to detail used in our sail graphics work.

- Why boat owners are switching from paint to vinyl finishes
When comparing a boat wrap vs paint, many people assume that as a boat vinyl wrapping company, we’ll always favour wraps. But that’s not the case. Both approaches have their place in modern boat restoration methods and understanding why someone is considering a wrap usually reveals which method is best. Most reasons fall into a few common categories: Aesthetic Upgrades – Many boat owners simply want a fresh, modern look or a way to breathe life back into a faded gel coat. Added Protection – One of the major advantages of vinyl wrap is the protective barrier it provides against UV exposure, salt and environmental wear sometimes even matching the boat’s original colour for a seamless look. Easier Maintenance – When gel coat becomes chalky or oxidised, wrapping becomes an appealing marine paint alternative. A vinyl finish often requires less upkeep and stays looking sharp with minimal effort. Concealing Imperfections – Wraps are great for covering flaws like small cracks or those frustrating bubbles that form around window borders. These factors highlight why both vinyl wrapping and spray painting have a place in modern boat care and why the best choice depends on your boat, your goals and your style. 'Pros' of vinyl wrapping 1. Cost efficiency - A significant advantage is cost. In many cases, especially with faded gel coats on larger vessels, the cost comparison, wrap vs paint strongly favours wrapping. Because the process is faster and often doesn’t require a specialised marine paint shed, wrapping can cost as little as one-third of a professional paint job. 2. Fast - As mentioned above, speed can be useful. Often we can wrap a boat in 2 days that would take 2 weeks or more to prep and paint. These times can vary wildly due to many factors of course, but whether it is getting a problem fixed as soon as possible in time for a charter or other pressing needs, wrapping can be a 'quick fix'. 3. Making the 'impossible' possible. Yes, everything is possible, but for a complete colour change of the interior of a vessel for example, completely ripping out all the furnishings and having them remade in a different colour or wood would be so expensive it would be out of the question. Vinyl wrapping the interior of a vessel can make this impossibility into a realised dream. 4. Options - Some textures and finishes are very unique to vinyl and are hard to accomplish with paint. Of course, printed vinyl wraps as an example are comparatively very easy to accomplish with vinyl, but would need a very skilled air-brush artist to accomplish with paint. 'Cons' of vinyl wrapping 1. Damage - Let's come straight to the point, vinyl wrapping is not as hard wearing, or long lasting, as a high-quality two-pack marine paint that is professionally and correctly applied. By nature, the vinyl is softer, so more prone to damage. On the plus side, this damage can often be easier and quicker to repair than having to blow in a section of paint for repair. 2. Longevity - As mentioned above, vinyl won't last as long as a good paint job, especially on horizontal surfaces like a T-top or roof. This can be influenced by how well it is kept clean and what products are used to help it, just like neglected paint will also fail prematurely, but as a rule of thumb vinyl will not last as long. 'Pros' of painting 1. Details - Painting can be great for detailed items that would not be suitable for wrapping, like air vents or other detailed items. Also, wrapping is not suitable for decks, so they are better off painted. Some surfaces won't allow vinyl to stick well due to surface condition or texture, so they are better off being painted. 2. Longevity - As mentioned, vinyl is not as 'tough' against physical damage or direct and constant sun exposure as paint is. 'Cons' of paint 1. Cost - This is probably a leading reason people, having understood the pros and cons, often choose a vinyl wrap with us. The process to prepare for a professional paint job and the facilities required are detailed and expensive, especially in Sydney. 2. Time - This is easily the second most important reason that people get us to wrap things, even on large vessels where cost is not so much of a problem, but rather a vinyl wrap is a quick fix that can be accomplished in a short turnaround to get the vessel looking good for a charter or event. 3. Limitation - As mentioned above, custom designs or detailed images on the boat may be difficult to do with paint, very difficult, especially with the precision and detail that a printer can easily do. 4. Repairs can be more costly sometimes, as there may be a need to repaint a larger area to keep the appearance visually consistent. Final Thoughts - Repaint vs Rewrap Your Yacht? Whether you’re exploring marine paint alternatives, comparing repaint vs rewrap yacht options or seeking more sustainable marine coating solutions, the decision ultimately depends on your priorities, cost, speed, longevity and aesthetics. Both methods have clear advantages, and we’re here to help you choose the best solution for your vessel. - How to Measure Your Boat
Preparing your boat for a vinyl exterior wrap starts with one essential step, accurate measurements. Whether you’re planning a full hull wrap , a waterline accent or a custom-designed graphic , precise sizing helps ensure a perfect fit and an efficient installation. This guide explains how to measure a boat for a wrap , including a hull measurement guide. Hull Measurement Guide The hull is the largest area of your boat and the section that requires the most accuracy. When measuring your hull, focus on: Overall length from bow to stern Height from the waterline to the top edge of the hull Curves and contours, especially along the bow and chine lines Obstacles such as cleats, rails, vents or steps Boat Length and Beam Measurement Two of the most important dimensions in marine design are boat length and beam measurement. Length overall (LOA): Measure the maximum length of the boat, including any extensions on the hull. Beam: Measure the widest point of the boat, usually midship. These measurements help determine the scale of the wrap and the amount of material required. They are also essential for accurate CAD modelling and template creation. Wrap template preparation begins once measurements are collected, using hand measurements, physical templates, digital tools or manufacturer specs to map artwork, check alignment and ensure precise cut lines. Whether you’re measuring at home or booking a professional scan, accurate sizing is the key to a successful boat wrap . Furthermore to estimate the amount of material needed, installers may use a vinyl coverage calculator. But don’t worry you don’t need to measure anything yourself when booking with us. At Innovative Wraps, we handle the entire process using advanced tools ranging from manual measurements to digital hull scanning and marine CAD design to create perfect templates for luxury-quality vinyl wraps. If you need help measuring your boat or want to start planning a custom wrap, our team is here to guide you through the entire process. Learn more about our services or request a quote here . - Premium LED Boat Name Install on a 55ft Fairline Squadron
Innovative Wraps specialises in LED boat signs , as demonstrated by our recent project involving a custom stainless steel LED backlit sign for the 55ft Fairline Squadron named Entourage. The project required a stainless steel LED-lit name sign tailored specifically for the flat transom of the boat, located at Central Coast Marina. The final sign was crafted to measure 150mm high and 1332mm wide. This design choice provides a striking yet sophisticated appearance across the rear of the vessel, effectively elevating its overall visual impact. To match the high-end aesthetics of the Fairline Squadron, the sign was manufactured using: 3mm polished stainless steel front 20mm acrylic back Gotham Black font for a clean, modern appearance White backlighting for crisp night-time visibility Designed for marine environments, the sign is 100% waterproof, making it ideal for this type of vessel. The polished stainless steel finish complements the yacht's style while resisting saltwater exposure. The Entourage sign is visible day and night, with white LED backlighting enhancing visibility without overshadowing the boat’s natural lines. This project highlights the attention to detail in marine signage, whether for supply-only or full installation. - Premium Vinyl Products Used by Innovative Wraps
One thing we get asked quite often is what product manufacturer and product line do we use for boat wraps, and of course that leads to the question why. Well, as with everything, it depends greatly on the application, the desired look, and how long it is meant to last. This can be anything from a 1 day branding through to a long-life hull or cabin wrap, with a desire for a carbon look finish through to a high gloss metallic colour. I won't keep you in suspense any longer. For hull wraps and wherever we can we use 3M products . Now for your next question, why ? You may think that we use 3M as we are Gold Certified 3M Partners, however, that actually came about after we had chosen to use 3M 4 years before. The reason that we had chosen the 3M line of wrap products was mainly threefold: The main reason, the 3M product seemed to outlast anything else we tried, and seemed to vastly outlast warranty and expected lifespan. The warranty was not de-rated for marine use. Important as we want our marine customers to know clearly what cover they have. The product development has been amazing, making the product extremely easy to apply, saving time and therefore cost for you the customer. The support from 3M and their supplier network has been exceptional giving us confidence that they will support their product. 3M has a specific brochure on Watercraft Graphics, added below and uploaded as a PDF for your reference. While this is tailored more for printed or cut graphics for boats, the majority of the Innovative Marine Coatings wraps are single colour wraps to simulate paintwork (respray or roller and tip being the most common methods). These vinyl systems are the same products we used on Beluga , where our team carried out a full hull wrap and gloss coating treatment on the 35m superyacht. The project involved custom materials, careful preparation, and a finish that held up to the conditions over several seasons, which is a good example of why we rely on these suppliers.
- How to Choose the Best Vinyl Wrap for Your Boat
When it comes to transforming and protecting your vessel, a vinyl wrap is one of the smartest upgrades you can make. Not only does it refresh the appearance of your boat, but it also offers long-lasting protection against UV rays, saltwater and everyday wear. With so many marine wrap colours, finishes and material options available, choosing the best boat vinyl wrap can feel overwhelming. Here’s a guide to help you make the right decision. 1. Choose a Style That Matches Your Boat’s Design Before comparing colours and finishes, start by thinking about the overall look you want to achieve. Every boat has its own geometry, character and purpose and your wrap should complement that. Sport boats often suit bold colours, high-contrast accents, or custom graphics, while luxury yachts typically benefit from refined, classic tones, hull wraps and stripes. Matching the wrap style to your vessel’s shape and personality ensures your boat stands out for the right reasons. 2. Pick the Right Marine Wrap Colours Colour choice plays a big role in both aesthetics and maintenance. Popular marine wrap colours include: Gloss black, navy, or gunmetal for a sleek, modern look White and light grey for a clean, classic finish Metallic and pearlescent tones for luxury yachts Custom printed designs for sport boats and commercial vessels Darker colours absorb more heat, while lighter tones tend to hide salt marks and scratches more effectively. 3. Selecting the Perfect Yacht Wrap Finish Your finish will determine your boat’s overall appearance and ease of care. When choosing a yacht wrap finish , consider these options: Gloss – Shiny, high-end look that resembles paint Matte – Modern and understated Satin – A soft sheen that reduces glare Metallic – Adds depth and a premium visual effect Textured films – Carbon fibre, brushed aluminium and more. Each finish brings a different personality to the vessel, so think about the statement you want your boat to make on the water. 4. Understand the Cost of Wrapping a Boat The cost of wrapping a boat depends on several factors: Size and shape of the vessel Type of vinyl selected Labour and installation complexity Custom graphics or speciality finishes While wrapping typically costs significantly less than repainting , it also offers the benefit of easier maintenance and the ability to update the look whenever you choose. 5. Choose an Experienced Marine Wrap Installer for the Best Vinyl Wrap A premium vinyl is only as good as the installer applying it. Look for a team with marine-specific experience, high-quality equipment and proven results. Professional installation ensures a smooth finish and longer-lasting performance. - Inside the Craft of Marine Vinyl Wrapping: Materials, Longevity and Finish Quality
When you see a striking yacht or a speedboat with a bold colour or sleek design, you might think it’s painted. But increasingly, boat owners are choosing marine vinyl wrapping and not just for aesthetics. This technique has become a game-changer in the boating industry, combining style, protection and flexibility. In this blog, we’ll take a look at what really goes into a high-quality wrap: the boat wrap materials , the longevity and what makes the vinyl finish quality look exceptional. Materials: The Foundation of a Quality Wrap The quality of any marine wrap begins with the film itself and vinyl remains the industry standard. Boat wrap materials are engineered to remain durable and highly adaptable, making them ideal for curved hulls, tight bow angles and complex contours. Top options among the best marine vinyl brands, like 3M marine wraps , resist shrinkage and maintain colour stability over time. On top of the film sits a protective laminate layer that shields the wrap from UV exposure, salt spray and abrasion while also determining the final aesthetic, gloss, satin or matte. High-end marine wraps also rely on powerful marine-grade adhesives that bond securely even in humid coastal climates. When combined with edge-sealers and correct surface preparation, these materials create a system specifically engineered for yacht surface protection and long-term performance on the water. Longevity: How Long a Marine Wrap Really Lasts A professionally installed marine exterior wrap using premium materials can last 5 to 10 years, depending on exposure and aftercare. Marine wrap durability is influenced by several factors: the quality of the vinyl, the installation technique, environmental conditions and the owner’s maintenance habits. Vessels moored in full sun year-round or frequently exposed to high UV levels and saltwater naturally experience faster wear. However, simple maintenance practices such as washing with mild pH-neutral cleaners, avoiding abrasive brushes and addressing any lifting edges early can dramatically extend the life of the film. Choosing a reputable installer is equally crucial, as poor surface preparation or incorrect heat-setting can shorten a wrap’s lifespan regardless of material quality. When properly cared for , a marine wrap provides long-term colour stability and yacht surface protection that rivals many painted finishes. Finish Quality: What Sets a Premium Wrap Apart The final appearance of a boat wrap is a direct reflection of the installer’s skill. Premium vinyl finish quality begins with meticulous surface preparation, ensuring the hull is free from oxidation, wax, silicone and imperfections that would otherwise show through the vinyl. During installation, cast vinyl must be carefully heated and stretched to conform to curves without overstressing the film. Expert installers know how to plan and hide seams, tuck edges under hardware or rub rails and avoid placing joins in high-stress areas. After application, proper heat-setting and edge sealing lock the wrap into place, ensuring long-term adhesion even in harsh marine environments. A top-tier wrap should look seamless, smooth and paint-like the result of precision workmanship, high-quality boat wrap materials and advanced marine-grade adhesives all working together. Innovative Wraps specialises in marine and architectural vinyl wraps, serving Sydney, the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. We wrap yachts, superyachts, sailboats and commercial vessels using premium marine films. - From Timber to Texture, 84ft SALT’s Interiors Were Elevated
SALT delivers luxury cruising for up to 49 guests across three stylish levels, complete with two king cabins and a twin. Innovative Wraps were brought in to modernise the interiors with a fresh, cohesive look, using carefully chosen vinyl wraps to elevate key spaces without removing any existing finishes. This involved a multi-area boat vinyl wrap project, using carefully curated colours and textures to deliver subtle yet effective upgrades. Because the existing wrap remained intact, we were able to layer new finishes seamlessly and efficiently, ensuring zero disruption to the vessel’s structural integrity. This blog highlights the sophisticated transformation across some of SALT’s interiors. Wheelhouse Upgrade In the wheelhouse, we wrapped approximately three metres of window surrounds and frames in a refined matte black vinyl . This simple but striking update replaced outdated trim tones with a clean, contemporary finish that better aligns with SALT’s interior palette. The matte surface reduces glare and adds a sleek touch of comfort for the helm experience. Flybridge Refresh Moving up to the flybridge, we revitalised the timber surfaces beneath the lounge using the client’s chosen grey vinyl. This finish introduced a more harmonious tone by softening the contrast of the original timber, while providing durable protection suited for an entertainment-focused space. The new wrap integrates beautifully with the updated seating and surrounding furnishings, creating a polished, cohesive look. Cabin Enhancements The most intricate part of the project took place within the guest and master cabins. We supplied and installed a textured white pearl vinyl (LX Benif, SF011) selected specifically to brighten the interior while adding subtle dimension. This premium material was used to wrap eight vertical wall sections across both cabins, totalling 15 metres of film. The result is a noticeable enhancement in light, warmth and visual cohesion. The textured pearl finish softens the timber-heavy areas, creating a balanced interplay between classic marine craftsmanship and fresh contemporary design. From bold matte contrasts in the wheelhouse to soft textural upgrades in the cabins, this boat's interior now reflects a cohesive transformation one that elevates it's visual appeal. Innovative Wraps specialises in marine and architectural vinyl wraps, serving Sydney, the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. - What Are the Most Popular Boat Wrap Colours?
Vinyl wrapping your boat is a practical alternative to painting in enhancing the appearance and protection of your boat’s hull. A vinyl wrap can be very cost-effective, durable, low-maintenance, easy to install, and easy to remove. The risk of damage is minimal each time you want to change the wrap. Whether you’re shifting from paint to vinyl for a fresher or more unique look, we thought it would be useful to do a quick post about what we find are the most common colours to choose, as we are often asked for advice when a customer is choosing. Here are the most popular boat wrap colours we have come across: 1. Gray/Silver If you want to give your boat a unique but still tasteful look, grey is a good choice. This colour is never flashy and radiates maturity and calmness. Grey has a quiet strength that some people find appealing---an attribute that may be associated with you. Silver can make your boat stand out in the crowd while looking sophisticated. Its metallic shine is often linked to futuristic concepts. This means silver might be considered if you want to present your modern outlook and sense of innovation. Check out some of the many wraps below we have done in greys at various places like White Bay 6 Marine Park in Rozelle or Marina Bayside at Taren Point Video of "Beluga", a 35m Moonen superyacht undergoing a vinyl wrap and coating by our team in 3M Gloss Storm Grey G31 at The Yard in Brisbane. 2. Blue Blue was voted as the most favourite colour in the world in 2017. And the 2020 colour trends have been dominated by shades of it. Suggestive of the oceans and skies, blue derives tranquillity, peace, and resilience. It’s the perfect colour if you consider your boat as a refuge from the bustling metropolitan life. Often a boat is already blue, as that was a fairly common gel-coat colour, and this has faded and oxidised badly in the Australian sun. However, the owner loved the original colour, and just wants to go back to that "boat blue" look. Thankfully, 3M has a colour called just that...G127 Gloss Boat Blue and this is one of our most common colours to use. Below are some of the many boats we have wrapped in various blues over the years at places like Sydney City Marine and Marmong Point Marina . 3. Black “Black is the ultimate colour of power. It gives an impression that you appreciate classic and elegant things and that you’re the person in charge. A dark colour is also helpful in covering stains and tarnishes that can make your boat look old.”, explains Shane Perry, investment analyst at Max Funding. Black also complements a boat interior that has steel, glass, and other ultra-modern elements. Below are some photos of again some of the many boats and sections of boats we have wrapped in gloss black. Variations of this of course are carbon fibre black, matte black, satin black and metallic gloss black. The work was done at various places including Woolwich Dock and Noakes Sydney . 4. White White has always been associated with nautical life. Trend forecasters say that this colour comes with a degree of fastidiousness, which means the boat owner prefer things clear, direct, and pristine. Most boats are coated in white because this colour doesn’t absorb a lot of sunlight, prevent the interior from getting too hot. Because white is reflective, it is also easier to spot when it's dark. Below is a photo of a nice catamaran we wrapped in gloss white at Killcare Marina . "Pineapple Bay" vinyl hull wrap of catamaran in 3M gloss white at Killcare Marina 5. Red Red is usually chosen by people who are outgoing, determined, ambitious, and fun. Or those who want to have those attributes. It only makes sense because red symbolises a zest for life. You probably notice most high-adrenaline movies always features a red car. According to a scholar on colour theory, picking a red vehicle tells the world that you have something impressive to show them. Again, sometimes the boat was a red gelcoat which has faded in the Australian sun, and the customer just wants it to look original again, like these Arvor boats below done at The Quays Marina in Pittwater . Vinyl Wrap for Branding Wrapping with a graphic that aligns with your brand is a cost-effective advertising method. One branded boat can create thousands of impressions within a year, depending on where you dock and where you travel. When you cruise around the community where you do business, the advertisement hits the target market. Furthermore, with your vinyl wrap's size and vibrancy, it will be easier for people to remember your brand. And because it’s easy to remove a vinyl wrap, it’s suitable for advertising during short-term events. Innovative Marine Coatings is a trusted provider of marine vinyl solutions.
