  • Amazing Benefits of Wrapping Your Boats with Vinyl

Marine painting has been the conventional boat coating method for many years now. It’s a decent long-term solution, but it might be time to consider vinyl wraps in certain applications. “Boat wraps allow you to decorate the vessel by customising its colours and patterns. They usually last for 3 to 5 years, and even longer particularly on vertical surfaces, such as the boat’s hull. The lifespan of a boat wrap depends on various factors, including quality of the wrap, installation, level of exposure, and maintenance.”, shares Alister Clare, investment consultant at Credit Capital and a boating enthusiast. Since the 2000s, vinyl wraps have become a strong competitor of marine painting. You can print almost anything on the vinyl---names, logos, intricate drawings, etc. 1. Gives Your Boat a New Appearance Boats are expensive. So, most of us can’t simply buy a new one once we are tired of the current vessel we have. A vinyl wrap can completely transform a boat’s appearance at only a fraction of marine painting cost. Whether for personal or commercial applications—the aesthetic details are entirely up to you. Your boat will look like brand new after vinyl installation. 2. Provides Protection from Elements Boats undergo standard durability tests before they’re put on the market. This is why you are promised years of enjoyment when you purchase a vessel from a legitimate boat manufacturer . However, just like any other object, boat surfaces will become damaged or faded due to elemental exposure. Although there are excellent paint jobs, they still require maintenance. A professionally-installed vinyl wrap can provide better protection and minimal repair. 3. More Options in Design and Colours The result of conventional marine painting largely depends on the artist. Not to mention, a custom paint job can cost you a fortune. Vinyl wraps can be printed with eye-catching graphics with luminous colours. You can choose between matte, metallic, and texture finishes. Any graphics can be reproduced on vinyl wraps , which means that the only limit is your imagination. 4. Easy to Install and Remove It takes only a few days to install a vinyl wrap, depending on the size of your boat. This means that when you change coating, your boating routine won’t be significantly affected. Unlike paint jobs, there’s no need for drying time in between coats. A vinyl boat wrap is also easier to remove. With enough care, the removal process won’t damage the surface underneath. This means vinyl coating ideal for advertising, corporate branding, and sponsorships . Or if you want to update the boat’s look regularly. 5. Easy to Clean and Repair Custom vinyl wraps have minimal maintenance requirements. Experts recommend hand-washing them with a gentle cleaner (e.g., dishwashing detergent) mixed with water. Avoid any harsh chemicals to preserve the luminosity. It is also discouraged to use pressure washers as these could pull up the edges. If vinyl gets damaged, the installer can simply cut out the damaged part and apply a patch. Innovative Marine Coatings is Australia’s premiere installer of exterior and interior vinyl boats wraps. We design, print, and install custom vinyl on water vessels to enhance protection and aesthetics. Contact us now to transform your boat! Article written by Jasper Cooper

  • Boat Registration Number Rules in NSW

One thing we often get asked to do is registration numbers that are not up to the standard that RMS requires in New South Wales, so we thought we would do a quick post explaining what is and isn't allowed so you don't get in trouble on the water. The NSW RMS requirements are as follows: SIZE: The registration numbers need to be 150mm high if they are on a power boat, or can be 100mm high if they are on a sail boat or jet-ski LOCATION : For a yacht the number can be on the transom (stern, back). For a power boat they need to be placed either s ide. Note, it doesn't say at the bow, so you can put them really wherever you want as long as they are visable. So they can be either side of the cabin, or either side on the stern. FONT: The font has a couple of requirements and this is what often is misunderstood. The font can't be just outlines of the letters. Yes, there are many boats with these, but that doesn't mean they meet the requirements. The font also need to be something clearly readable. Script fonts and complex handwritten or funky fonts are often then not very suitable. Remember, a registration number is like a number plate on a car, it needs to be clearly legible. The letters all need to be in an upper case. Quite often customers want the "N" at the end of the NSW boat registations to be made 1/2 the size of the rest of the letters, especially in the case of a custom registration number. This technically isn't legal as the letters need to be 150mm high as per above details on sizing. COLOUR: Last but not least, the colour needs to be contrasting the vinyl wrap we put on your boat, or the paint/gelcoat in the section the decal is going over. For example, white or silver on a dark blue wrap, or dark blue or black on a light coloured wrap. The exact wording and link to the RMS website with the requirements: Registration numbers Registered vessels are assigned a registration number. This number must be displayed at all times on both sides of the hull, in figures at least 150mm high (100mm for Personal Watercraft (PWC) and sailing vessels). Sailing vessels may display their registration number on the transom. The registration numbers must be displayed in a contrasting colour to the hull, in solid characters (not outlines), in a clear font or style and in upper case, so that they can be clearly identified. Hopefully you found this helpful! If you have questions or want us to do you up a custom registration number design, please contact us !

  • Vinyl Wrap of Two Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 - 3M Carbon Fiber CFS12 and Gloss Flip Psychedelic GP281

How to make your new Beneteau Gran Turismo 40 look unique? Already a great looking boat, these two customers decided to up the stakes a bit with a custom vinyl wrap to their new pride and joy. Soon after import, the hulls were vinyl wrapped by the Innovative Marine Coatings team using high-grade wrap vinyl by 3M . The first Gran Turismo was done at Sydney City Marine in Rozelle, Sydney using the 3M GP281 Gloss Flip Psychedelic. This was quite a statement and very much an individual choice, but the outcome was magnificent. The flip vinyls change colour as the angle of the light changes off the surface, giving the boat a multicolored rainbow look...just what the owners wanted as they had named the boat after the family pet dog who had sadly just passed over the "Rainbow Bridge". VIDEO: GRAN TURISMO 40 BENETEAU VINYL HULL WRAP IN 3M GP281 GLOSS FLIP PSYCHEDELIC The next Gran Turismo, also brand new, was wrapped in a black carbon fibre look material also from 3M, the CFS12 Carbon Fiber Black. Why do we use 3M, we wrote an article about exactly that here: Why we use 3M vinyl wrap for boats VINYL BOAT WRAP - GRAN TURISMO 40 in 3M CFS12 CARBON FIBER BLACK Have a boat that you would like to have wrapped? • Vinyl Hull Wrap of Riviera 44 at Marmong Point Marina

This week the Innovative Marine Coatings team has been busy at Marmong Point Marina on the central coast north of Sydney below Newcastle. A well looked after Riviera 44 was the subject. While the hull had been painted a few years ago, it was ready for protection and a refresh. For the colour, the customer chose 3M Gloss Fire Blue, which turned out brilliantly making the boat really pop and look like a much more modern vessel.

  • Interior Vessel Vinyl Wood Grain Wrap to Fix Milky Wood Varnish and other issues

Our team has been involved in the refurbishment using vinyl wraps on the inside of luxury vessels such as Sunseekers and other brands which has given the customer a huge choice of colour options to update the boat, and saved them a horrendous sum of money vs the traditional method of repair to boot. VARNISH GONE MILKY WHITE IN PATCHES Who knows the exact reason why some clear coat (varnish) goes milky over time. Some believe it is moisture, some believe it is UV exposure, but in our experience it has been unlikely to be either as we have seen wood veneered doors deep in vessels cabins that are affected one side of the room, but not on the other. If it was moisture, surely all would be affected. If it was UV, surely the backs of doors in the deepest darkest crew cabins would not be affected, and yet they are. WOOD CHANGED COLOUR, GENERALLY LIGHTER Some of the original timber surfaces have generally changed colour in the upper parts of the cabin where sun exposure has affected the timber and varnish causing it genera lly become lighter, and now no longer matching other areas of wood surrounding including a mis-match of colour from the front of the door versus the back of cupboard doors. CRACKING OF CLEAR COAT AND WATER DAMAGE Of course there is also the possibility of discolouration due to water damaged from leaking windows and hatches. Sometimes this will lead to the water swelling under the clear coat and then the clear coat will lift and crack, separating from the surface of the timber. THE PROBLEM While not a serious sea-worthiness problem, it unfortunately drags down the appearance and therefore value of a vessel if the interior wood is obviously discoloured, patchy, water damaged or cracked. The real problem is the huge task of correcting the issue the traditional way with sanding and re-painting. Many of the items have been permanently fixed inside the vessel and significant damaged would incur if they were forcibly removed. Items such as doors are easily removed, however, as one customer recently showed me on a door his friend had attempted to repair, one too many passes with the sander and the thin veneer will be compromised and the substrate starts to show through. The problem of then somehow sanding evenly and then painting in-situ of the items that cannot be removed then spray painting is very problematic and time consuming. THE SOLUTION, OR AT LEAST A VERY GOOD OPTION The IMC team has done several luxury vessels where we have offered and installed a solution by using the LG Hausys brand of architectural films that we import to Australia (website www.uniquevinyl.com.au ), 3M DINOC vinyl, or Vvivid architectural vinyl. How does this work? One of the films is selected to suit the look the owners are after, either trying to pick something close to the original, or by selecting a totally different look. Again, our product website www.uniquevinyl.com.au has a very good shop section showing the different vinyl finishes, however, nothing is as good as a real sample of the product which can be seen in a site meeting with us, or by ordering a product sample off the Unique Vinyl website. Installation time can then vary depending on the size and complexity of the project, but the team will try to minimise the impact to you, and if requested we can make sure to work into your time schedule so your use of the vessel is not impacted. Call or message us today if you have issues with your boat interior woods, or simply want to change the look and modernise the boat you love.
