Fleming 55 Capping Rail Wrap – Marine-Grade XPEL Gloss at RMYC Newport

We recently completed a stunning transformation on a Fleming 55 yacht at the Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) Newport, giving its capping rails a sleek new look with XPEL Marine-Grade Gloss Protective Film.

Why Wrap Capping Rails?

Traditionally, maintaining timber capping rails on a boat like the Fleming 55 requires regular sanding, varnishing, and maintenance—a time-consuming and costly process for boat owners. Vinyl wrapping offers a smart, durable, and far less maintenance-intensive alternative, while still delivering a high-gloss finish that looks like freshly varnished timber year-round.

Vinyl wrapping offers a practical alternative. This method consists of applying a durable film that mimics the shine of freshly varnished wood without the extensive upkeep. Boat owners can enjoy a glossy finish all year round.

The Process

For this project, we wrapped all the capping rails on the Fleming 55, delivering a consistent, high-gloss finish along the entire perimeter.

Preparation was a key part of this job. The team at O’Neill Shipwrights handled all the fitting removal, pre-wrap preparation, and post-wrap silicone work, ensuring the wrap could be applied with precision and without obstruction. Their shipwright work set the perfect foundation for us to deliver the best possible finish.

The Product: XPEL Marine-Grade Gloss

We used XPEL’s Marine-grade industrial gloss film, specifically designed for harsh marine environments. Unlike standard automotive wraps, XPEL Marine offers:

  • Superior UV resistance to prevent yellowing and fading.

  • High-gloss clarity that enhances the appearance of timber or painted surfaces.

  • Durability against saltwater, sun exposure, and general wear and tear.

  • Ease of cleaning, with less need for polishing or refinishing.

This film is purpose-built to withstand the rigours of life at sea while keeping your boat looking showroom fresh.

The Location: RMYC Newport

Located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, RMYC Newport is home to a wide range of prestigious yachts and cruisers. It was the perfect setting for this premium upgrade.

Final Thoughts

The recent application of XPEL Marine-Grade Gloss on the capping rails of a Fleming 55 yacht demonstrated how innovative solutions can transform both appearance and maintenance for marine vessels.

With traditional maintenance methods becoming increasingly burdensome, wrapping has emerged as an effective, time-saving alternative. The combined expertise of O’Neill Shipwrights and the quality of XPEL Marine film along with the expertise of our skilled team, resulted in a significant upgrade for this yacht.

As boat owners seek smarter solutions that balance style and practicality, services like these will become vital. The Fleming 55, with its stunning capping rail wrap, exemplifies how thoughtful upgrades enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of a yacht.

Investing in such advancements ensures that boating remains a fulfilling experience for everyone.
